Description

Nine Eagles State Park is a hidden secret of Decatur County. Whether you are here to fish, camp, swim or just relax, we hope you enjoy your stay. Rugged wooded hills and valleys abundant with oak trees make Nine Eagles one of southern Iowa`s most scenic parks. The park includes trees more than 300 years old. Visitors enjoy six miles of bridle trails and nine miles of hiking trails, swimming at the sandy beach, pleasant camping areas and shaded picnic spots with tables and fireplaces scattered throughout the park.

Recreation:

Trails
The park has a three mile hiking trail that goes around the lake and several other trails connecting to the campgrounds. If you plan to walk to the entire trail, take water and insect repellant. The trail takes you through rugged, hilly mature hardwood timber and small remnants of native prairie. The keen observer will likely see a variety of wildlife species that take refuge in these habitats. The trails are grass and crushed rock and are open to hikers and mountain bikers. During the winter months, there are seven miles of multi-use trails for snowmobiles and cross-country skiers. The equestrian trails total seven miles through rugged timber and small prairie remnants.

Lake Activities
Fishing on the 64 acre lake for bass, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie is a popular sport. The lake's timbered watershed makes it one of the clearest artificial impoundments in the state. Only rowboats and electric motors are permitted. A fish cleaning station and a boat ramp is also located nearby. Nine Eagles has a fishing jetty located on the lake that provides great shoreline access.
The beach, which offers unsupervised swimming, is a great place for swimmers and sunbathers, young and old. A playground and picnic area are close by.

Facilities:

Picnicking/Shelters
Nine Eagles is a great place for a picnic. Several shaded picnic areas with tables and fire grills are located throughout the park. Two open shelters area available and may be reserved online.

Camping
There are three campgrounds boasting both electric and non-electric sites, modern showers, modern and non modern restrooms and a trailer dump station. Primitive equestrian campsites are also offered and include fire rings, pit toilets, water and hitching rails. There is day-use parking in the center of the equestrian area.

Nearby Attractions:

Lamoni`s Amish community sells a number of items around town including baskets, jellies and bread. A Civil War reenactment is held each Labor Day weekend in Lamoni. Leon holds a championship rodeo event each year the first week in July.

Nearby Towns
Lamoni is seven miles west on Highway 69. Davis City is six miles northwest. Pleasanton is one mile south. Leon is eight miles north on Highway 69.
